3 days in Barcelona

The north-eastern Spanish city is among one of Europe's favourite destinations for short breaks and a popular spot with inter-railers going to Spain. It is also home to some of the world's most fascinating architecture thanks to the works of Antoni Gaudi.

Day 1 - Barcelona

Ramble along Las Ramblas

Las Ramblas isn’t just Barcelona’s most famous street, but one of the world’s most famous. Thanks to street performers, pet stalls, and an endless flow of people, it is a feast for the senses. Just off it, down Carrer de la Portaferrissa, is the city’s Catedral.

For lunch get some tapas in Bar del Pi before exploring the labyrinthine streets of the Barri Gothic, Barcelona’s old town.

Start the evening in Can Paixono, a champagne bar on Calle de la Reina Cristiana where you can get cheap tapas and cheaper champagne (€4 a bottle anybody?). From there make your way to Bosc de les Fades at the foot of Las Ramblas, a bar that would look more in place on the set of Lord of the Rings.

Day 2 - Barcelona

The works of Antoni Gaudi

La Sagrada Familia, Gaudi’s unfinished masterpiece, is ironically his best-known and a real must-see. Take an hour to explore one of the world’s most-visited building sites.

Make your way back to the city centre via Passeig de Gracia and you will encounter two of Gaudi’s other masterpieces - La Predera and Casa Battlo. The chimney tops on the roof of the former are fascinating.

In the evening check out Barcelona’s El Born district. This part of the city is peppered with bars.

Day 3 - Barcelona

Montjuďc

Take the cable-car to Montjuďc which overlooks the entire city. Up here you can savour the views, go to museums or take refuge in the parkland.

Upon returning to the centre you can discover Maremagnum, one of the city’s newest developments and made for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.

That night go to Bar Marsella in the El Raval district before partying into the early hours in Bikini, Barcelona’s biggest club.
